Netgear Nighthawk R7000 Wi-Fi Router Review
Last Updated On: by
Netgear Nighthawk R7000 comes equipped with some impressive features while also delivering top-notch performance. It was the first 802.11ac router powered by the 1GHz, dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor entrant into the market.
Unlike its predecessors that had permanent internal antennas, the all new Netgear Nighthawk R700 has three removable external antennas that have significantly improved its Wi-Fi coverage and speeds.
Other cool features include dual-band support, MU-MIMO (Multi-user, Multiple-Input, Multiple Output) and Dynamic QoS, just to mention but a few.
Speeds and Range
The official Netgear website, illustrates the Nighthawk R7000, as an AC 1900 wireless router, fitted with a Dual-Core 1GHz processor, capable of providing both wired and wireless gigabit speeds.
What AC 1900 means is that Nighthawk R7000 can provide speeds of; 1300Mbps on the 5.0GHz band and 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz band.
The Nighthawk R7000 supports the use of 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) feature, which boosts the higher than average speeds on its 2.4GHz band.
Beamforming technology available in the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 improves the speed, range, and availability of wireless network on the 2.4 and 5.0GHz bands.
It also has three external antennas; they are highly powered amplifiers that boost Wi-Fi coverage, enabling you to move freely within your house without worry that your speeds will drop or you may lose connection.
Network Standards and Bands
The Netgear Nighthawk R7000, is a dual-band router, this implies that; it supports both the 2.4GHz and the 5.0GHz bands simultaneously.
This is a remarkable feature especially for backward compatibility, because most old gadgets operate on the 2.4GHz frequency, while the latest devices work on the less congested 5.0 GHz band.
It supports the following IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer) 802.11 standards.
|802.11 Standard||Bands/Frequency/Radio||Extra Support|
|b, g, n||2.4GHz||256 QAM|
|a, n, ac||5.0GHz|
When it comes to physical connections, the Nighthawk R7000 boasts of five-gigabit Ethernet ports.
Of the five ports; 4 are for LAN (Local Area Network) connection, with the remainder being for WAN (Wide Area Connection).
In addition to those, it has 2 USB ports; one port is a USB 3.0 (Front) while the other is a USB 2.0 port (Back).
The USB 3.0 is a great addition so as to enjoy faster file transfers, especially when using the NETGEAR Ready Cloud USB Access feature (discussed below).
MU-MIMO (Multi-user, Multiple-Input, Multiple Output)
One of the features that help the Nighthawk R700 boast of higher speeds for seamless video streaming on various devices and smooth online gaming experience is because of MU-MIMO.
Older routers were only capable of serving only one device at a time but latest routers, the Nighthawk R7000 being one of them can serve several devices all at the same time.
Some of the significant advantages of MU-MIMO are:
- High speeds/bandwidth across all your devices.
No more internet traffic congestion. You can stream videos and music smoothly, game online without lags and also download files, all at the same time!
- Efficient network performance
Through simultaneous streaming across different devices, Wi-Fi is efficiently used. How? Because this boosts your network’s overall speed, capacity, and throughput.
Dynamic Quality of Service (QoS)
For purposes of online gaming and video streaming, Internet speeds is an essential aspect, in-game lags or continuous video buffering is loathed.
Dynamic QoS always helps in determining which applications or devices should be allocated more bandwidth.
Using its bandwidth or speed distribution and traffic listing techniques, Dynamic QoS can robotically give speed sensitive activities, e.g., video streaming, online gaming, etc. more bandwidth while also making sure that applications or operations not so sensitive to speed are still working and are not slowing down your connection.
Secure and Simple Cloud Storage
Netgear offers a safe and straightforward cloud service known as NETGEAR Ready Cloud USB Access.
By just plugging in your USB hard-drive into the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router a safe personal cloud space is instantly created.
Via a web browser or the ReadyCLOUD mobile application, you can access your hard-drive from any location.
Another excellent feature is that you can conveniently access Dropbox and Google Drive without any extra costs, limited storage or privacy issues.
ReadyShare Vault is a free Pc software that is used with the Netgear R700 router. This excellent freeware helps you plan automatic and stress-free backups and guard your documents, files, etc.
It allows you to do that from any computer to the USB drive connected to your Netgear R700 router.
Family time and content on the Internet can be well managed using the Circle with Disney smart. Each family member especially kids’ time online can easily be controlled using the inbuilt Circle parental controls.
The Circle allows Time Limits on the Internet to be set; Bed Time for each gadget connected to the Internet also you can Pause the Internet either by the user or by the device, all this through just a press of a button.
Despite being of plastic, the Netgear R700 router is very tough, durable and weighs a paltry 1.8 pounds. It has a flat surface that makes it possible to hang it on the wall or lay it flat.
Just as its nickname “Nighthawk” suggests, it has pointed corners with an angular shape coupled up with three huge but detachable antennas; this look makes it look similar to one of Netgear’s model known as the F117 Nighthawk stealth jet fighter.
It has a couple of LED lights on the top to indicate the status of its Wi-Fi bands, Ethernet and USB ports, etc. On its right it has two buttons: one to turn on Wi-Fi and the other switches on the Wi-Fi Protected Support (WPS).
However, the Nighthawk R7000 has its downsides too. Its functionality on the 2.5GHz band, even though it is considerably fast, it loses out to other top routers . Unlike other modern routers, Netgear’s old-school approach to its first-time set-up has also been criticized.
Overall, the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 performs well alongside its combined set of impressive features. Netgear Nighthawk R7000 is good value for money for any home internet use looking for a suitable networking device that will offer top-notch performance.
