Linksys EA7500 Max-Stream AC1900 Wi-Fi Router Review
The Linksys EA7500 Max-Stream is the second router from Linksys featuring MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple Input Multiple Output) the latest rendition in wireless tech. Through its standout MU-MIMO feature, the EA7500 can serve several clients at the same time without compromising on speeds.
Next-Gen AC Wi-Fi with breakthrough MU-MIMO technology for powerful streaming and gaming.
Apart from the MU-MIMO feature, Linksys EA7500 Max-Stream is an equally modern router, donning some USB ports for USB storage drives and printers as well as four Gigabit Ethernet ports.
Design and Build
The Linksys EA7500 Max-Stream is built from muted black plastic gently curved to bring out a simple yet modern look. It is a relatively big device measuring 10.12 x 7.24 x 2.20 inches. At the back panel are three removable antennas that can be directed to the preferred direction, perfect for better reception and range.
Aside from being placed flat on a shelf or desk, the EA7500 can be mounted on a wall; this makes it easier to set it in areas where the line of sight is clear.
A major disappointment of this router is it lacks appropriate LEDs to signal status of various activities. Users have to rely on the Linksys LED logo that is continuous when everything is OK but blinks in case of errors.
All of the router’s physical connection ports are placed on its back edge. Five Ethernet ports, four for LAN connection and the other for connecting a modem.
Adjacent to the Ethernet ports are two USB ports one being USB 3.0 compatible and the other a USB 2.0, a reset button, a WPS button, and power button.
First Time Set-Up
Setting up the Linksys EA7500 Max-Stream is simple an easy. Once you’ve connected everything, open your web browser and visit http://LinksysSmartWiFi.com or 192.168.1.1. Here you can choose between the automatic setup utility or manual installation.
The utility setup scans your network and guides you on configuring your wireless network and router settings. After completion, you can create a Smart Wi-Fi account for free which you can use to control your network and router from a remote location.
Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Web console and the Mobile app offer a plethora of settings and services for managing your router and clients.
The Main Window has a list of Smart Wi-Fi tools on its left and widgets of basic Wi-Fi settings on the right. Smart Wi-Fi tools include; Parental Control, External Storage Settings, Guest Access, Network Map, Media Prioritization, and Speed Test.
The Router Settings has options for Internet connectivity and Local Networks Settings, VLAN, Advanced Routing, Time Zone Settings, Basic Network Name, and Password.
The Wireless Settings Window provides options for one to; allow MAC filtering, choose a security encryption (WEP, WPA, or WPA2/Personal/Enterprise/Mixed), and create access schedules.
Security choices on the Smart Wi-Fi tools window include; Internet Filtering, Firewall, Port Forwarding and VPN Passthrough. The Troubleshooting Window is for reviewing DHCP table and resolving router issues
Network Standards, Speeds, and Range
The Linksys EA7500 Mx-Stream AC1900 Multi User-MIMO Router, provides two dedicated Wi-Fi bands with combined speeds of up to 1900 Mbps. Its 2.4GHz band takes care of the older wireless devices (N and G) delivering optimal speeds 600Mbps. The 5GHz band hits speeds of 1300Mbps and is responsible for the latest wireless AC devices.
It is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core processor that makes it capable of handling up to three data streams simultaneously. This results in improved Wi-Fi performance and faster speeds to more devices.
It also makes use of beamforming technology in addition to its flexible antennas to boost Direct Wi-Fi signals strength and range to each of your devices.
Linksys EA7500 allows you to connect to other devices via the gigabit Ethernet ports and share files at speeds 10x faster than fast ethernet. The USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports allow you to connect and share your storage and printing devices across the network.
MU-MIMO (Multi-user, Multiple-Input, Multiple Output)
The Linksys AC1900 Max-Stream Wi-Fi router features MU-MIMO, the latest wireless technology for constant, simultaneous Wi-Fi connections.
MU-MIMO technology allows you to make your time online more efficient: you can allocate high-bandwidth tasks, such as 4K video streaming, to the high-speed 5 GHz band, and leave the 2.4 GHz band to handle simpler tasks.
You and others can enjoy online-gaming, streaming, and download files simultaneously across different gadgets, without experiencing lags or buffering – at up to 2x the speed of a non-MU-MIMO router.
Linksys Smart Wi-Fi App
This app helps users to efficiently manage their router and home network from any location via a smartphone or tablet. Here are some of the actions you can set up using the app.
Quickly create a separate and secure network of up to 50 clients and easily share the access credentials. This will ensure that your primary network remains safe even with the presence of outsiders.
Kind of a QoS (Quality of Service) like that found in Netgear’s Nighthawk R7000. It allows the user to give tasks requiring high bandwidth higher priority. This feature ensures users can perform various tasks on different devices simultaneously without any change in speeds.
An efficient feature to ensure a safe online experience for your kids. Easily control content accessed by the kids, regulate their time on the Internet and also allow or deny access to the Internet by devices.
- A single USB 3.0 port is not enough considering it is a modern router.
- Depending on the Linksys LED logo to show the status of various activities is also shortcoming by itself, “many users on intermittent connections would surely appreciate at-a-glance diagnostics in the form of status lights,” according to Trusted Reviews.
The shortcomings of this Wi-Fi router are minor and cannot outweigh the remarkable range, stability and speeds it offers. It is a perfect router for a big home with many users, offices or student residential. In comparison to other routers with MU-MIMO feature, the Linksys EA7500 is one of the cheapest.
